Maakurathu Children's Request Fulfilled with Official Opening of New Futsal Pitch
Politics ·
The children of Maakurathu in Raa Atoll have seen their aspirations turn into reality with the official inauguration of a new futsal pitch. The project, completed in early May, marks the culmination of a direct request made by the island's youth to the presidency.
The initiative began in January last year during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s nationwide tour. During his visit to Maakurathu, a group of local children met with the President privately to express their need for a dedicated sports facility. In a move reflecting the administration's commitment to youth engagement, President Muizzu immediately instructed the Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Fitness to initiate the project.
Under the close supervision of Minister Abdulla Rafiu, the government fast-tracked the development to ensure the children's request was met promptly. The project was awarded to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), which oversaw the construction and delivery of the facility within a year of the initial request.
Minister Abdulla Rafiu recently travelled to Maakurathu as the President’s special envoy to formally open the pitch. The government highlighted that the project serves as a tangible example of the administration's policy of listening to citizens regardless of age and taking decisive action on community needs.
The new pitch is expected to provide a safe and modern environment for the youth of Maakurathu to engage in sports and physical activity, fostering community health and social cohesion on the island.
