MACL Partners With Three National Agencies To Boost Velana Airport Emergency Response

World ·
Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has signed strategic Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with three national agencies to strengthen disaster and emergency management at Velana International Airport (VIA). The agreements establish a unified framework designed to handle everything from sudden aviation incidents to large-scale natural disasters. The partnership involves the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the Maldives Meteorological Service, and the Maldives Red Crescent (MRC). By formalizing these ties, MACL aims to create a seamless coordination system that minimizes response times and enhances the overall resilience of the Maldives' primary gateway. MACL CEO and Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed signed the agreements alongside State Environment Minister Ibrahim Mimrah and senior officials from the respective agencies. The MoUs move beyond paperwork, outlining specific roles for each institution and mandating joint training programs and regular emergency simulations to ensure readiness. A critical component of the new framework is the implementation of a structured communication protocol. This will allow MACL to share real-time data with the meteorological office and relief agencies, ensuring that decisions during a crisis are based on the most current information available. This synchronization is expected to reduce airport downtime and improve passenger safety during emergencies. As the primary hub for tourism and transport in the Maldives, Velana International Airport faces unique vulnerabilities to environmental and operational risks. By integrating the expertise of the NDMA and the Red Crescent with precise weather data from the Meteorological Service, MACL is positioning VIA as a safe and well-prepared international hub capable of weathering unexpected crises.
