Mahloof Appointed Maldives Ambassador to Japan Following Parliamentary Approval
Politics ·
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has officially appointed Ahmed Mahloof as the Maldives' Ambassador to Japan during a ceremony at the President's Office on Thursday. The diplomatic posting follows parliamentary ratification on December 3, fulfilling the Foreign Service Act requirement that all diplomatic appointments receive legislative approval.
Mahloof brings substantial political experience to his new diplomatic role. His career began with the Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party under former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom before transitioning to the Maldivian Democratic Party. During the previous administration, he served as Minister of Youth, Sports, and Community Empowerment, overseeing national programs in these sectors.
The new ambassador recently joined the ruling People's National Congress after leaving his former party earlier this month. This political transition comes as he prepares to represent the Maldives in Japan, one of the country's key international partners.
The appointment ceremony formalizes Mahloof's credentials through the presentation of the letter of credence, marking his transition from domestic politics to international diplomacy. As ambassador, he will be responsible for strengthening bilateral relations between the Maldives and Japan across tourism, trade, and development cooperation.
