The main span connecting Vilimalé and Ghuvahalfaru of the Thilamaale Bridge, which connects Malé to Thilafushi, has been completed, linking the two islands.
According to information revealed by the Ministry of Infrastructure, Vilimalé was connected to Ghuvahalfaru yesterday. Therefore, a connection from Malé to Ghuvahalfaru is now in place.
The MDPP government signed an agreement with India’s Afcons Company for the construction of the Thilamaale Bridge on September 16, 2021. The initial agreement was to complete the entire project by May 17, 2024. However, the date was later changed, and it was agreed that the work would be completed by September 30, 2026.
After signing the agreement, underwater geotechnical surveys and borehole drilling works for the bridge were carried out in 2022. Additionally, the area for constructing the bridge segments in Ghuvahalfaru was established.
Work on preparing super-structures and pre-cast segments at the Ghuvahalfaru site proceeded vigorously. The work of driving piles into the sea for the Thilamaale Bridge began on August 18, 2023. Prior to this, work in the Vilimalé area and pile-driving works for the bridge from the tip of Malé had already started. Furthermore, the work of piling and capping four land-based piles for the bridge also began under the MDPP administration in February 2023.
