Majlis Rules Police Did Not Violate MP Maaroof's Privilege
Politics ·
The People's Majlis on Wednesday passed a resolution stating that the police did not violate the privilege of MdPP member for Kaafu Atoll, Maaroof Zakir, during his arrest at a fishermen's demonstration last year. The case was referred to the Majlis' Privilege and Conduct Committee by the member himself. In its report, the committee concluded that, based on the timeline of events and information gathered, there was no indication that police actions diminished the member's privilege. The report was passed with 48 votes in favour and 10 opposed. Maaroof had claimed his arrest during the peaceful demonstration organised by the Federation of Fishermen's Union (BKY) on National Fisheries Day 2025 was illegal and involved excessive force. However, the committee found no evidence to support a privilege violation.
