Malaysia Pledges Enhanced Support for 2,700 Maldivian Students Following High-Level State Visit

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has pledged concrete assistance to streamline administrative processes and expand opportunities for Maldivian students and residents in Malaysia. Speaking on PSM’s “Nation Chat” programme, President Muizzu revealed that the Prime Minister’s recent state visit—conducted at the invitation of the Maldives—focused on improving the living and academic conditions for approximately 2,700 students currently enrolled in Malaysian institutions. The commitments also extend to the estimated 6,000 Maldivians residing in Malaysia with their families. Key among the promises is the facilitation of critical internship opportunities, particularly for those pursuing medical and technical degrees. President Muizzu emphasized that these measures are designed to alleviate both the academic hurdles and the day-to-day administrative challenges faced by the Maldivian community abroad. Beyond education, the diplomatic visit served as a catalyst for significant economic cooperation. The two leaders discussed accelerating a USD 100 million currency-swap agreement and initiated early talks on a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA). This proposed trade deal would grant special concessions to bilateral commerce, potentially lowering costs and increasing the volume of trade between the two nations. President Muizzu described Malaysia as a “special nation” to the Maldives, noting that the discussions branched into critical global and local issues. These included joint cooperation on climate change and the resolution of operational challenges currently facing the Maldivian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur. To ensure these pledges translate into tangible results, the two countries have agreed to establish a joint committee. This body will be tasked with overseeing the implementation of these agreements and elevating the strategic partnership between Malaysia and the Maldives to a higher level of cooperation.
