Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim Arrives in Maldives for High-Level State Visit

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim arrived in the Maldives on Saturday for a two-day state visit aimed at deepening bilateral ties and exploring new avenues for cooperation. He was received at Velana International Airport by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. The visit, scheduled for September 14–15, comes at the invitation of President Muizzu, which was extended during the President's official trip to Malaysia in April. This marks Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s first visit to the archipelago since taking office in November 2022. The arrival was marked by a vibrant welcome ceremony featuring cultural performances by schoolchildren. While the initial greeting took place at the airport, a formal official welcome ceremony is scheduled for tomorrow morning to commemorate the start of the state visit. Central to the visit are high-level official talks between Prime Minister Ibrahim and President Muizzu. The discussions will focus on strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation within the international arena. The two leaders intend to identify new sectors for mutual growth and will witness the signing of several memoranda of understanding (MoUs) designed to formalize these commitments. As part of the diplomatic itinerary, the Malaysian Prime Minister will hold separate courtesy meetings with key Maldivian officials, including Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef, Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla, and Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam. The Maldives and Malaysia share a diplomatic history spanning 58 years. This state visit builds upon a foundation of strong people-to-people ties, consistent high-level exchanges, and a shared commitment to development across various sectors.
