Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim Arrives in Maldives for Official State Visit

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has arrived in the Maldives for a two-day official visit, marking his first trip to the archipelago since taking office in November 2022. He was greeted upon arrival at Velana International Airport by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. The visit, scheduled for September 14–15, comes as a direct result of an invitation extended by President Muizzu during his own official visit to Malaysia in April 2025. The welcome ceremony at the airport featured a traditional cultural performance by schoolchildren, reflecting the deep-rooted diplomatic friendship between the two nations. Central to the visit are high-level bilateral talks between Prime Minister Ibrahim and President Muizzu. The leaders are expected to discuss strategies for strengthening international cooperation and exploring new opportunities to expand ties across multiple economic and social sectors. A key highlight of the visit will be the signing of several memoranda of understanding (MoUs) designed to formalize and enhance bilateral relations. In addition to the presidential meetings, the Malaysian Prime Minister will hold separate courtesy calls with Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef, Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla, and Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam. These meetings underscore the commitment of the Maldivian government to engage Malaysia across the executive, legislative, and diplomatic spheres. The Maldives and Malaysia share a diplomatic history spanning 58 years. This long-standing relationship is characterized by strong people-to-people ties, frequent high-level state exchanges, and consistent cooperation in various developmental sectors. The current visit is seen as a strategic step in modernizing and deepening this historic partnership for the mutual benefit of both nations.
