Maldives 2.0 Project to Decentralize Public Services Through National Digitalization Policy

The Maldives is embarking on a comprehensive digital transformation aimed at streamlining public service delivery across its dispersed islands. The 'Maldives 2.0' project, a three-year national digitalization policy led by the administration, seeks to replace fragmented bureaucratic systems with a decentralized, integrated digital environment. Saeeda Umar, Managing Director of the Maldives Innovation and Digital Company (MINDCo), detailed the project's ambitions during a recent appearance on the 'Trade Desk with Ana' podcast, hosted by the Ministry of Economic Development, Transport and Trade. According to Umar, the initiative is specifically tailored to the unique geography of the archipelago, ensuring that citizens can access essential civic services from any location without the need for physical travel to administrative hubs. Under the new framework, the government intends to fundamentally redesign bureaucratic workflows. The goal is to eliminate both physical and digital queues, replacing them with a cohesive network where services are accessible in a few clicks. Umar noted that this shift will allow public offerings to become highly personalized, functioning as tailored services designed for the specific needs of each individual.
