Maldives 2.0 Project to Modernize Local Councils and Combat State Corruption

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has affirmed that the 'Maldives 2.0' digitalisation project will fundamentally empower local councils by increasing the accessibility and efficiency of government services. Speaking on the PSM Nation Chat podcast, the President detailed how the initiative aims to transition the state toward a technology-driven administration over the next three years. Launched on May 9, 2025, the Maldives 2.0 project is a cornerstone of the government’s broader digital transformation policy. The initiative is designed to create a smarter government framework characterized by faster service delivery and transparent operational systems. The President noted that the project is progressing rapidly, with the Maldives 2.0 Digital Transformation Bill already submitted to the Majlis, the Maldivian Parliament, last month. Central to the project's mission is the elimination of systemic corruption. By replacing opaque manual processes with transparent digital systems, the administration aims to ensure greater accountability across all state institutions. President Muizzu emphasized that no government body will be exempt from this transition, as the move toward digital records will reduce the reliance on physical paperwork and streamline information retrieval for both officials and the public. Beyond administrative efficiency, the President highlighted tangible benefits for citizens in key sectors. Healthcare is expected to see significant improvements through the introduction of digital health services, providing more seamless care for residents across the atolls. Additionally, the digitalisation drive will extend to the economic sector, offering small businesses better access to financial assistance and creating vital links to global markets. By digitizing the interaction between service providers and the public, the government expects to reduce bureaucratic delays and foster a more responsive governance model. This transformation marks a strategic shift toward a modern, transparent state where technology serves as the primary bridge between the government and the people it serves.
