Maldives' Aasandha Scheme Expands Spectacle Coverage to Registered Clinics and Optical Shops

Health ·
The National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) has announced that the Aasandha healthcare scheme will extend its coverage to include spectacle services provided by registered optometrists at clinics and optical shops starting next month. The expansion, set to take effect from the 15th, aims to address public concerns raised during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s engagements with Male' City residents. The initiative is designed to make it easier for citizens to access spectacles and ensure broader healthcare coverage. NSPA stated that the rules governing this expanded service will be formulated in collaboration with relevant agencies and made public. The announcement comes amid ongoing public concerns over the high cost of spectacles from private businesses. To alleviate costs, the government increased the Aasandha subsidy for spectacles from MVR 1,000 to MVR 2,000 every two years last June. Additionally, free optical shops have been established at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) and Hulhumale' Hospital. However, some citizens worry that increased government intervention in the optical market may disrupt the delicate balance of private businesses.
