Maldives Advocates for Inclusive AI to Bridge Service Gaps Across Remote Islands
World ·
The advancement of artificial intelligence should be measured by its capacity to improve public services for ordinary citizens, rather than the mere sophistication of the technology, stated Minister of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology, Ali Ihusaan.
Addressing the "Global Dialogue on AI Governance" in Geneva, Switzerland, Minister Ihusaan argued that AI development must not be the exclusive domain of powerful nations. He called for a global effort to ensure AI systems remain inclusive, accessible, and beneficial to all, regardless of a nation's economic standing.
For an archipelagic nation like the Maldives, the Minister highlighted that bridging the service gap between urban centers and remote islands is a primary challenge. He noted that AI is uniquely positioned to solve these geographical hurdles, ensuring that equitable access to government services is no longer hindered by distance.
To lead this transition, the Minister introduced the "Maldives 2.0" initiative. This digital transformation strategy aims to revolutionize service delivery by focusing on three core pillars: data integrity and security, robust cybersecurity frameworks, and a transparent, responsible governance system.
Progress is already underway, with the Maldives completing its first AI Readiness Assessment in collaboration with UNESCO and the establishment of a dedicated Maldives AI Lab. These steps provide the foundation for a more digitally integrated government.
On the international stage, Minister Ihusaan identified three critical priorities for global AI development. He urged nations to shift focus from simple application investment toward building core infrastructure, developing sustainable human resources within the AI sector, and creating integrated data systems that allow seamless information sharing across all government sectors.
Concluding his address, the Minister reaffirmed that while the Maldives is small in size and population, it remains a committed advocate for inclusive AI policies that protect the rights and interests of people globally.
