Maldives Air Travel Recovers as New Routes Offset Middle East Disruptions

Politics ·
The Maldives is seeing a steady recovery in its vital air travel sector, with government mitigation efforts countering widespread disruptions caused by the ongoing Middle East conflict. Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen stated that measures to boost airline capacity are showing positive results, crucial for a nation where 99% of tourists arrive by air. The initial impact had led to significant flight cancellations and a decline in visitor arrivals. Airline operations have improved, with carriers like Emirates, Etihad Airways, and flydubai currently operating two daily flights through established regional corridors. Additional services from Air India, Aeroflot, and AirAsia have also helped increase capacity. Passenger booking loads have shown a strong recovery, climbing from approximately 50% to 75%, a performance Minister Ameen noted is better than in many other countries affected by the regional tensions. Further bolstering connectivity, Qatar Airways is scheduled to commence a daily service to the Maldives starting April 1. In another development, Belarus’s Belavia Airlines is preparing to begin flights, with administrative arrangements nearing completion, while Aeroflot is expected to operate three weekly flights from April.
