Maldives and 10 Nations Condemn Israeli Interception of Gaza Aid Flotilla

The Maldives has joined a coalition of 10 nations in strongly condemning the Israeli military's interception of the "Global Sumud Flotilla," a humanitarian convoy attempting to deliver essential aid to Gaza.
In a joint statement issued alongside Brazil, Jordan, Pakistan, Spain, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Colombia, South Africa, Turkey, and Libya, the Maldives denounced the obstruction of the peaceful initiative. The participating foreign ministers emphasized that the flotilla, organized by civil society groups, was intended to highlight the deteriorating humanitarian crisis in Gaza and asserted that blocking such efforts is unacceptable.
The coalition described the interception of vessels in international waters and the subsequent detention of activists as grave violations of international law and international humanitarian law. The statement specifically noted that the protections afforded to humanitarian workers under the Geneva Conventions were disregarded during the operation.
Expressing urgent concern for the safety of those detained, the 11 nations called upon Israeli authorities to ensure their immediate release. They further urged the international community to fulfill its legal and moral obligations to protect civilians and ensure full accountability for violations of international law.
Reports indicate that Israeli naval forces intercepted the flotilla on Wednesday night in international waters, approximately 45 nautical miles from the Greek island of Crete and 600 nautical miles from the coast of Gaza. The operation resulted in the halting of more than 20 vessels and the detention of over 175 activists from various countries, who were reportedly taken to Israel.
Established in mid-2025, the Global Sumud Flotilla is an international effort designed to challenge the ongoing blockade of Gaza. The convoy was carrying critical supplies, including food, medical equipment, and infant formula, aimed at alleviating the suffering of the civilian population.
