Maldives and Angola Sign Two Key Pacts to Boost Diplomatic Cooperation

The Maldives and Angola have formally entered into two agreements designed to strengthen bilateral ties and expand cooperation across diplomatic and political spheres. The memorandums of understanding (MoUs) were signed in New York on the sidelines of the High-Level Week of the 81st United Nations General Assembly. Representing the Maldivian government, Minister of Foreign Affairs Iruthisham Adam signed the documents alongside Angola’s Minister of External Relations, Téte António. The agreements serve as a strategic follow-up to preliminary discussions held between the two foreign ministers during a meeting in Male' in June. The first agreement establishes a formal mechanism for regular political consultations between the two foreign ministries. This framework will enable both nations to systematically discuss bilateral relations, exchange perspectives on regional and international developments, and identify new sectors for mutual cooperation. The second MoU focuses on capacity building and professional development. It creates a partnership between the Foreign Service Institute of Maldives (FOSIM) and Angola’s Venâncio de Moura Diplomatic Academy. Under this agreement, the two institutions will collaborate on professional training, the enhancement of diplomatic skills, and the exchange of institutional best practices. These agreements mark a significant step in the evolving relationship between the two nations, which officially established diplomatic ties on November 10, 2020. By institutionalizing political dialogue and educational exchange, both countries aim to build a more robust and sustainable partnership on the global stage.
