Maldives and Australia Ink Pact to Bolster Maritime Security and Surveillance

Politics ·
The Maldives and Australia have entered into a formal agreement to enhance cooperation in maritime safety and security, establishing a strategic framework to protect the Maldives' vast ocean territory. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed during a ceremony at the Ministry of Defence and National Service. Minister of Defence and National Service Hassan Rasheed signed for the Maldivian government, while Rear Admiral Brett Sonter, Commander of the Australian Border Force, signed on behalf of Australia. Under the terms of the agreement, the two nations will implement joint training programs and coordinate maritime surveillance activities. The pact also focuses on the systematic exchange of information and technical expertise to better address emerging challenges within the Maldivian maritime domain. This agreement solidifies Australia's role as a primary partner in the Maldives' defense sector. The collaboration builds upon a history of tangible support, most notably the recent donation of a Guardian-class patrol boat to the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), which significantly upgrades the nation's capacity for coastal monitoring and law enforcement. The ceremony was attended by senior officials from the MNDF and the Australian Ambassador to the Maldives, David Jessup. By formalizing this partnership, both countries aim to strengthen regional safety and security, ensuring a more stable and secure maritime environment in the Indian Ocean.
