Maldives and Australia Pledge to Strengthen Parliamentary Ties in Cambodia

The Speaker of the Maldivian Parliament, Abdul Raheem Abdulla, has met with the Speaker of the Australian House of Representatives, Milton Dick, to explore new avenues for parliamentary cooperation and bilateral growth. The high-level meeting took place on the sidelines of the second Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference currently being held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Both leaders focused on enhancing the existing diplomatic framework to foster closer legislative ties between the two nations. Maldives and Australia have shared diplomatic relations since 1974, building a partnership rooted in education, maritime security, and ocean affairs. The discussions in Phnom Penh aim to build upon these foundations, utilizing international agreements to further stabilize and strengthen the relationship. In addition to the bilateral talks, Speaker Abdulla is slated to deliver an address centering on the conference theme, “Unity for Peace and Stability: Strengthening International Law and Resolving Issues through Peaceful Means.” The global summit serves as a critical forum for parliamentary leaders to collaborate on conflict resolution, sustainable development, and the upholding of international law. The Speaker is supported by a high-level delegation, including Parliamentarians Mohamed Shahid, Musthafa Hussain, and Ashraf Rasheed. Technical support is provided by the Chief of the Bureau of the Parliament, Ahmed Nihaan Hussain Manik, and Assistant Director General of the Foreign Relations Department, Zuyyina Badhree. By engaging with counterparts like Australia, the Maldivian Parliament seeks to integrate global best practices in governance while advocating for peaceful resolution to regional and international challenges on the world stage.
