Maldives and Australia Strengthen Defence Ties to Enhance Regional Maritime Security

The Maldives and Australia have held high-level discussions focused on enhancing maritime security and advancing human resource development within the defence sector. The talks took place during a courtesy call by Australian Ambassador David Jessup on the Minister of Defence and National Service, Hassan Rasheed.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the deliberations aimed to deepen bilateral cooperation with a specific emphasis on safeguarding shared maritime interests. Both nations explored collaborative strategies to build technical capacity and maintain regional stability, acknowledging the evolving security challenges in the Indian Ocean.
Minister Hassan Rasheed expressed his gratitude for Australia's longstanding support of the Maldivian defence sector. He emphasized that expanding bilateral engagement is pivotal for the Maldives to effectively address security priorities and protect its vast territorial waters.
Australia remains a primary defence partner for the Maldives, providing critical assets and training to bolster local capabilities. This partnership was recently highlighted by the Australian government's provision of a Guardian-class patrol boat to the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF). The vessel is designed to increase the MNDF's surveillance capabilities and support broader regional maritime security efforts.
The meeting underscores a continuing commitment between Male' and Canberra to ensure a secure and stable maritime environment, leveraging Australia's technical expertise to empower Maldivian security forces.
