Maldives and China Seek to Expand Fish Exports to Sichuan Province

Politics ·
The Maldives and China are exploring new avenues to expand trade, with a specific focus on exporting Maldivian fish products to China’s Sichuan Province. The initiative was discussed during a high-level meeting between the Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade, and the Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives. Chinese Ambassador Kong Xianhua stated that the collaboration aims to fully utilize the existing Free Trade Agreement (FTA) to create mutual economic benefits. Beyond fisheries, the two nations discussed strengthening cooperation in agriculture and various industrial sectors to diversify trade ties. Ambassador Kong also emphasized the potential for increased foreign direct investment, noting that discussions included encouraging companies from Sichuan to invest in Maldivian enterprises. This strategic push is intended to stimulate local economic growth while opening new markets for Maldivian goods. Minister Saeed highlighted that the conversations centered on maximizing the advantages of the Maldives-China FTA, particularly in enhancing food security and increasing the volume of exports. By streamlining trade processes and expanding reach, the government aims to provide more opportunities for local exporters and businesses. The Maldives-China Free Trade Agreement officially came into effect on January 1 of last year. According to the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, the agreement is designed to lower trade barriers and provide significant economic relief and growth opportunities for Maldivian businesses and the general public. Currently, Maldivian businesses are actively importing goods from China, while export activities are ongoing. The push into Sichuan Province represents a targeted effort to scale these operations and establish a more robust footprint for Maldivian seafood in the Chinese market.
