Maldives and China Seek to Expand Trade Under Free Trade Agreement

The Maldives and China have held high-level discussions aimed at maximizing the economic benefits of the China-Maldives Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The talks took place during an official visit to China by the Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade, Mohamed Saeed. In a key meeting with Hainan Province Governor Liu Xiaoming, Minister Saeed focused on deepening trade ties and advancing mutual economic cooperation. Both parties explored strategies to better utilize the opportunities created by the FTA and to launch joint initiatives designed to drive sustained economic growth for both nations. Minister Saeed noted that the Maldives appreciates the Chinese government's commitment to supporting national development priorities. This cooperation aligns with the strategic vision established under the leadership of President Mohamed Muizzu and Chinese President Xi Jinping, following the President's state visit to Beijing in 2024. Beyond governmental policy, the visit included a focus on tangible industry growth. Minister Saeed visited the Haiken Group Product Exhibition Hall, where he met with Deputy General Manager Meng Xiaoliang and leadership from the Hainan State Farms Investment Holding Group. These discussions centered on critical areas of food security and regional connectivity. A primary objective of these talks is to expand the export of Maldivian fisheries to the Hainan region, leveraging the FTA to increase the reach of the Maldives' primary industry in the Chinese market. By strengthening these economic pillars, the Maldives aims to diversify its export destinations and secure more stable food supply chains, ensuring that the framework of the FTA translates into tangible growth for local businesses and the broader economy.
