Maldives and Ethiopia Sign Air Agreement to Expand African Tourism Market

World ·
The Maldives and Ethiopia have signed a bilateral air services agreement to establish direct flight connectivity, marking a strategic expansion of the Maldives' aviation network into the African continent. The agreement was formalized at the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation by Minister Mohamed Ameen and Yohannes Abera, Director General of the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority. The pact provides the necessary legal framework for scheduled flight operations between the two nations, facilitating smoother diplomatic and economic ties. Minister Ameen noted that Ethiopia becomes the sixth African nation to enter into such an agreement with the Maldives, joining Egypt, Mauritius, Rwanda, Seychelles, and South Africa. This expansion is viewed as a critical step in diversifying the Maldives' visitor base and reducing reliance on traditional markets. "This agreement will facilitate the launch of direct scheduled flights between our two nations," Minister Ameen stated, highlighting that Ethiopian Airlines—Africa's largest and fastest-growing carrier—has already expressed strong interest in operating routes from Addis Ababa to the Maldives. The initiative aligns with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's economic vision to build a resilient air transport industry capable of withstanding global economic shifts. By connecting Maldivian shores to major international hubs, the administration aims to drive sustainable tourism growth and broaden the nation's economic horizons. The partnership is expected to be mutually beneficial. While Ethiopian Airlines brings an extensive global network to the Maldives, the agreement opens the door for the national carrier, Maldivian, to operate flights into Ethiopia. This connectivity is projected to strengthen the Maldives' position as a premier global destination and foster long-term prosperity through increased accessibility.
