Maldives and EU Secure $4.65 Million Grant for Community Mangrove Protection

The Maldives and the European Union (EU) have signed a financing agreement to launch a nationwide initiative titled ‘Community-based Mangrove Protection and Regeneration in the Maldives.’ The project is designed to strengthen climate resilience and bolster environmental protection across the archipelago.
The grant, totaling EUR 4 million (approximately USD 4.65 million), will fund community-led projects focused on shoreline protection, biodiversity conservation, and climate change adaptation. These efforts are central to the Maldives' commitment to its third Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Paris Agreement.
Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sheryna Abdul Samad signed the agreement, which was presented by Dr. Johann Hesse, Head of Cooperation of the EU Delegation to the Maldives, on behalf of Ambassador Maria Carmen Moreno Raymundo. During the ceremony, Minister Abdul Samad praised the EU as a longstanding development partner, noting the importance of their continued support in advancing the nation's climate action priorities.
Beyond funding, the initiative emphasizes the intersection of grassroots action and legislative reform. Dr. Johann Hesse highlighted that while mangroves are critical for carbon storage and coastal defense, their long-term survival depends on strong policy frameworks and local engagement. He stressed the need to amend existing policies to better support the conservation of coastal ecosystems.
The program aims to empower local communities to take an active role in managing their environment, ensuring that conservation efforts are sustainable and inclusive. By combining civic participation with improved urban and environmental planning, the project seeks to create lasting benefits for both the island ecosystems and the residents who depend on them.
This partnership underscores the strategic cooperation between the Maldives and the EU, reflecting a shared urgency to implement actionable climate solutions and promote eco-friendly development in one of the world's most climate-vulnerable nations.
