Maldives and India Tackle Trade Barriers in Proposed Free Trade Agreement Talks

World ·
The Maldives and India have begun critical consultations on Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) as part of official negotiations for a proposed Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The Ministry of Economic Development, Transport and Trade stated that these discussions aim to identify specific challenges facing businesses and develop strategic solutions to streamline commerce between the two nations. Technical Barriers to Trade encompass the regulatory and technical requirements that often complicate international exchange, such as product standards, testing procedures, certification requirements, and labeling regulations. By addressing these hurdles, the proposed FTA seeks to create a more seamless environment for exporters and importers. The recent meetings brought together government agencies and key players from the Maldivian export sector. A primary focus was placed on ensuring the safety and quality of goods through stringent sanitary and phytosanitary measures. These standards are essential to protect human and animal health and safeguard agricultural products from pests and diseases. The trajectory toward this agreement began last year during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's official visit to the Maldives, where both nations committed to launching FTA negotiations. By March of this year, the two countries finalized the Terms of Reference (ToR), establishing the essential framework and scope required to steer the negotiations toward a final agreement. This diplomatic push comes as the Maldives aggressively expands its global trade network. The nation recently entered into force its Free Trade Agreement with China in January 2025. Additionally, the Maldives has signed a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) with Turkiye, with the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade confirming that final procedures are currently underway to make that agreement operational. By resolving technical frictions with India, the Maldives aims to diversify its export opportunities and strengthen economic ties with one of its most significant regional partners, ensuring that local businesses can compete more effectively in the Indian market.
