Maldives and Indonesia to Strengthen Islamic Cooperation and Imam Training Programs
Politics ·
The Maldives and Indonesia are seeking to deepen their bilateral ties through enhanced cooperation in Islamic affairs and religious education. Minister of Islamic Affairs and Endowments, Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, recently held high-level discussions with Indonesia’s Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Muhammad Anis Matta, to outline a shared vision for community and religious development.
Central to the talks was the development of the Islamic Endowment Fund, a strategic initiative aimed at sustaining religious infrastructure and social welfare. The two officials explored the creation of joint training programs specifically designed for imams and khatibs (preachers), focusing on upgrading the skills and knowledge of religious leaders to better serve their congregations.
Minister Dr. Shaheem emphasized the critical importance of this collaboration, noting that strengthening the bond between the two nations would yield significant benefits for religious growth and community empowerment. The discussions highlight a growing trend of the Maldives leveraging partnerships with other prominent Muslim-majority nations to modernize its religious administration.
As part of the diplomatic visit, Vice Minister Matta met with senior officials from the Ministry of Islamic Affairs to receive briefings on current initiatives and the operational framework of the various agencies under the ministry's jurisdiction.
To gain a firsthand understanding of the local religious landscape, the Indonesian delegation also toured two of the capital's most significant landmarks: the Islamic Centre and the Malé Friday Mosque. These visits underscored the cultural and spiritual ties that bind the two archipelago nations, paving the way for more structured academic and religious exchanges in the future.
