World ·
The Maldives and Japan have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral relations as both nations prepare to celebrate the 60th anniversary of their diplomatic ties next year.
During a courtesy call at the President’s Office, Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef met with the Japanese Ambassador to the Maldives, Ishigami Rumiko. The discussions focused on identifying new avenues to expand cooperation and enhance the strategic partnership between the two countries.
Vice President Latheef expressed gratitude for Japan's longstanding support, specifically noting contributions to infrastructure and human resource development. The Vice President highlighted several key sectors where Japanese assistance has been vital, including education, sports cooperation, and community development programmes.
Given the shared vulnerabilities of both island nations, the meeting also emphasized the importance of climate resilience and disaster management. These areas remain critical priorities as the Maldives seeks to fortify its environment against rising sea levels and extreme weather events.
Beyond governmental aid, the Vice President welcomed the strengthening of people-to-people ties. He pointed to tourism and economic cooperation as primary engines for future growth, suggesting that expanding these sectors would provide tangible benefits for citizens of both nations.
The meeting concluded with both diplomats reaffirming a mutual commitment to a robust and enduring partnership, ensuring that the upcoming diamond jubilee of diplomatic relations serves as a catalyst for further collaboration.
