Maldives and Kenya Sign Agreement to Enhance Regular Political Consultations

The Maldives and Kenya have formalized a new diplomatic framework to strengthen bilateral ties through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at establishing regular political consultations between the two nations. The agreement was signed in New York on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. The move follows a high-level meeting between the foreign ministers of both countries, signaling a strategic intent to elevate their diplomatic engagement. Representing the Maldivian government, Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam signed the MoU. On behalf of Kenya, the document was signed by Musalia Mudavadi, the Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs. The newly established framework is designed to provide a consistent platform for the two governments to deepen political dialogue. By institutionalizing these consultations, both nations aim to identify emerging areas of cooperation and solidify a partnership that serves their mutual strategic interests. Diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Kenya were first established on October 23, 1995. Since then, the two countries have maintained a friendly and stable relationship, though this new agreement marks a significant step toward more structured and frequent cooperation. In a joint statement, both governments emphasized that the MoU reflects a shared commitment to deepening their partnership. The agreement is expected to pave the way for increased collaboration and initiatives that will provide tangible benefits to the citizens of both the Maldives and Kenya.
