President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim have established a strategic framework for future cooperation following a historic state visit to the Maldives from September 14 to 15. A centerpiece of the bilateral discussions was the agreement to provide the Maldives with a USD 100 million currency swap facility through the central banks of both nations. This financial arrangement is intended to bolster economic stability and strengthen the fiscal ties between the two Islamic nations. In addition to the currency swap, the two leaders agreed to initiate formal discussions on a comprehensive trade agreement. President Muizzu emphasized that this move will create tangible opportunities for local businesses and citizens by opening new avenues for commerce and investment. The discussions spanned a wide array of strategic sectors. Both leaders identified trade, investment, education, and healthcare as priority areas for collaboration. Further cooperation is expected in tourism, sustainable development, Islamic affairs, and defense, reflecting a shared vision for regional security and prosperity. Prime Minister Anwar described the relationship between the two countries as "friendly and brotherly," expressing his commitment to ensuring these ties continue to evolve for the mutual benefit of their respective populations. He also extended a message of support to the congress of the People's National Congress (PNC), the governing party of the Maldives. President Muizzu characterized the visit as the beginning of a "new chapter" in diplomatic relations.
