Maldives and Malaysia Strengthen Ties with $100M Currency Swap Agreement

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim have reaffirmed the enduring diplomatic and cultural bonds between the Maldives and Malaysia during a state luncheon held in honor of the visiting leader. Hosted by President Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed, the event served as a platform to solidify bilateral cooperation. President Muizzu emphasized that the relationship between the two nations transcends formal diplomacy, rooted in generations of people-to-people connections, particularly through Maldivians who have pursued higher education in Malaysia. Central to the discussions was the announcement of a USD 100 million currency swap facility established between the two countries' central banks. This financial arrangement is intended to bolster economic stability and enhance the bilateral partnership. President Muizzu expressed gratitude for Malaysia's ongoing support, specifically highlighting the Graduate Pass Scheme, expanded access to higher education scholarships, and streamlined visa facilities for families with children with special needs. He further noted that the two nations are now pursuing a Preferential Trade Agreement and exploring potential collaborations with Petronas to investigate the Maldives' mineral and natural resources. Looking toward the future, the President identified several key sectors for enhanced cooperation, including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, digital transformation, and the blue economy. Health, tourism, trade, and investment also remain priority areas for joint growth. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim praised the Maldives as a nation steadfast in its principles and values, expressing confidence in President Muizzu’s leadership and vision. He underscored the currency swap facility as a critical component of the strengthening partnership. The state luncheon was attended by senior members of the Malaysian delegation, high-ranking Maldivian government officials, and members of the diplomatic corps. The event was a cornerstone of Prime Minister Anwar's state visit, aimed at expanding the strategic and economic landscape of Maldives-Malaysia relations.
