Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has concluded a strategic state visit to the Maldives, marking a significant step in deepening bilateral cooperation between the two nations. During the visit, Prime Minister Anwar held high-level discussions with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to align interests across several critical sectors. Central to the diplomatic engagement was the signing of Memoranda of Understanding focused on defence and Islamic affairs. The two leaders also announced the commencement of negotiations for a Preferential Trade Agreement, a move expected to lower barriers and boost economic exchange between the two Asian nations. Beyond formal agreements, the discussions at the President’s Office touched upon healthcare, tourism, and shared geopolitical positions on international issues. The leaders explored opportunities for collaboration in digital infrastructure and renewable energy, reflecting a shared commitment to modernizing their respective economies and ensuring environmental sustainability. To facilitate easier movement between the two countries, President Muizzu and Prime Minister Anwar agreed to streamline existing consular and visa arrangements, a move likely to benefit both tourists and business travelers. The visit was characterized by high-level diplomatic protocol. Prime Minister Anwar was received by President Muizzu at Velana International Airport and honored with a ceremonial welcome at Republic Square in Malé. The diplomatic itinerary included a State Luncheon hosted by the President and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed, as well as courtesy calls with Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef, the Speaker of the Parliament, and Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam. Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam formally bid farewell to the Malaysian leader at Velana International Airport upon his departure. The visit signals a renewed momentum in Maldives-Malaysia relations, focusing on tangible outcomes in security, trade, and regional stability.
