Maldives and Malaysia Strengthen Ties With New Defence and Islamic Affairs Agreements

The Maldives and Malaysia have formalized new partnerships in defence and Islamic affairs to strengthen bilateral relations. The agreements were signed during a high-level ceremony at the President’s Office during Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s state visit to the Maldives, at the invitation of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. The defence sector agreement aims to enhance security cooperation and strategic collaboration between the two nations. The document was signed by the Maldivian Minister of Defence and National Service, Hassan Rasheed, and Malaysia’s Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, Johari Abdul Ghani. In a parallel move to bolster cultural and religious ties, a second agreement focusing on Islamic affairs was signed. This accord was formalized by the Maldivian Minister of Islamic Affairs and Endowments, Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, and Minister Johari Abdul Ghani on behalf of Malaysia. Beyond the formal signing ceremonies, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and President Dr Mohamed Muizzu held official bilateral talks to outline a broader vision for the two countries. The discussions centered on identifying emerging opportunities for partnership and expanding their joint cooperation within the international arena. These agreements mark a significant step in diversifying the diplomatic and strategic relationship between Male' and Kuala Lumpur, focusing on both national security and shared spiritual heritage to ensure long-term regional stability and mutual growth.
