Maldives and Malaysia to Begin Negotiations for Strategic Trade Agreement

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim have agreed to initiate discussions to establish a formal trade agreement, marking a significant step toward strengthening economic ties between the two nations. The announcement came in a joint statement following high-level official talks during Prime Minister Ibrahim's state visit to the Maldives. The discussions focused on enhancing existing cooperation and identifying new avenues for partnership. President Muizzu emphasized that the visit reflects the longstanding friendship and mutual respect between the two countries, aiming to elevate bilateral relations to a more strategic level. On the economic front, President Muizzu actively invited Malaysian government entities and private businesses to explore investment opportunities within the Maldives. The discussions highlighted four critical sectors for growth: renewable energy, digital infrastructure, construction, and Islamic financing. Concluding the talks, the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to collaborating on the international stage.
