Maldives and Palau Forge Alliance on Climate Change and Sustainable Tourism

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and Palau’s Minister of Human Resources, Culture, Tourism and Development, Ngiraibelas Tmetuchl, have held high-level talks to strengthen cooperation between the two island nations on climate resilience and sustainable tourism. The meeting focused on advancing the shared priorities of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in the face of escalating environmental threats. The discussions took place on the sidelines of the SIDS Global Business Network Forum 2026 and Island Investment Forum currently being held in the Maldives. Both leaders addressed the unique challenges facing small island territories, specifically the disproportionate impact of rising sea levels and the urgent need to transition toward more sustainable tourism models that protect fragile ecosystems while ensuring economic growth. A key theme of the dialogue was the creation of strategic investment opportunities. Both nations emphasized the importance of fostering inclusive partnerships that can support long-term resilient development, ensuring that economic progress does not come at the expense of environmental integrity. President Muizzu reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to collaborating closely with Palau to amplify the collective voice of SIDS on the international stage. By aligning their diplomatic efforts, the two nations aim to secure stronger global support and more effective climate financing for vulnerable island states. The broader forum, running from August 23 to 25, serves as a critical hub for representatives from the public, private, and development sectors. Its primary objective is to catalyze innovative partnerships that provide scalable solutions for sustainable development across the SIDS network, bridging the gap between global investment and local island needs.
