Maldives and Russia Seek to Boost Flight Frequency to Drive Tourism Growth

World ·
The Maldives and Russia are negotiating a significant expansion of air connectivity to increase the number of flights between the two nations. The discussions took place in Moscow during a meeting between Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen and Russian Deputy Minister of Transport Dmitry Zverev. Minister Ameen emphasized that enhancing transport links is a critical step toward attracting more visitors to the archipelago. The move comes as Russian tourism continues to show strong growth; in the first five months of this year, Russian travelers accounted for 13% of all arrivals, marking a 21% increase compared to the previous year. Over 130,000 Russians have already visited the Maldives in 2024, cementing Russia's position as the country's second-largest source market. As part of a high-level government delegation visiting Moscow and St. Petersburg from August 17 to 21, the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) is actively working to bring additional airlines to Velana International Airport (VIA). The delegation includes representatives from the Ministry of Tourism, Visit Maldives, and several private tourism entities. MACL officials are engaging with both current and prospective carriers to explore the introduction of new direct routes, increased flight capacity, and the establishment of sustainable year-round services. These talks aim to align airline availability with the growing demand from Russian travelers. Beyond aviation logistics, the delegation is meeting with tour operators and travel trade representatives to identify emerging market trends. The goal is to support increased flight capacity through targeted destination promotion and specialized travel packages that make the Maldives more accessible to Russian tourists. This diplomatic mission follows a similar strategic visit to China in July, reflecting a broader government effort to diversify international arrivals and expand air connectivity in line with global demand. With tourism serving as the backbone of the Maldivian economy, these initiatives are vital for sustaining national revenue and long-term industry growth.
