Maldives and Saudi Arabia Discuss Hosting Annual International Qur’an Competition
World ·
The Maldives and Saudi Arabia are exploring a partnership to host a prestigious international Qur’an competition in the Maldives, potentially establishing it as a recurring annual event.
The proposal was discussed during a high-level meeting between the Minister of Islamic Affairs and Endowments, Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, and his Saudi counterpart, Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dawah and Guidance Dr Abdullatif bin Abdulaziz Al-Sheikh. The talks took place in Saudi Arabia during an official visit by Minister Shaheem at the invitation of the Saudi government.
During the diplomatic exchange, Minister Shaheem formally requested Saudi Arabia's support and expertise to ensure the competition reaches an international standard. Beyond the competition, the two ministers discussed several strategic initiatives designed to advance Islamic affairs and religious education within the Maldives.
Minister Shaheem expressed deep appreciation for the enduring relationship between the two nations, specifically acknowledging the support provided by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. He noted that these ties are critical for the continued growth of religious cooperation and mutual development.
The collaboration between the two ministries is part of a broader diplomatic history; the Maldives and Saudi Arabia formally established diplomatic relations on March 17, 1981. Over the decades, Saudi Arabia has remained a key partner for the Maldives, providing significant financial assistance and technical support for national development projects.
In addition to religious initiatives, Saudi Arabia continues to play a vital role in facilitating Hajj arrangements for Maldivian pilgrims, ensuring a more convenient and accessible journey to the holy sites. Minister Shaheem emphasized that under the leadership of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and the Saudi monarchy, the brotherly ties between the two nations are poised to grow even stronger, fostering a future of shared prosperity and spiritual growth.
