Maldives and Seychelles Sign Visa Waiver Agreement to Boost Tourism and Ties

Politics ·
The Maldives and Seychelles have entered into a bilateral visa waiver agreement, enabling citizens of both nations to travel between the two countries without the need for prior visas. The agreement officially takes effect on May 15. Under the new arrangement, citizens from both island nations are permitted to travel and stay for up to 30 days without a visa. The deal was finalized during an official visit to the Maldives by the Seychelles Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Barry Faure. Maldives Foreign Minister Dr. Iruthisham Adam welcomed the move, stating that the implementation of visa-free travel is a significant step in enhancing the relationship between the two neighbors. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted that the agreement reflects the deep friendship and shared cooperation between the Maldives and Seychelles as Small Island Developing States (SIDS), which face similar geographical and economic challenges. Minister Iruthisham expressed optimism that removing travel barriers will revitalize tourism and open new investment opportunities. By simplifying travel, the government hopes to strengthen people-to-people connections and encourage citizens to explore the unique marine environments and natural beauty of both archipelagos. This diplomatic milestone coincides with the 46th anniversary of formal ties between the two nations, which first established diplomatic relations on July 1, 1980. The agreement is viewed as a strategic effort to deepen bilateral cooperation and foster mutual growth in the Indian Ocean region.
