Maldives and Seychelles Strengthen Ties Through First Official Foreign Minister Visit

Politics ·
The Maldives and Seychelles have held high-level discussions to bolster bilateral cooperation across key sectors, marking a significant milestone in the diplomatic relations between the two Indian Ocean neighbors. Maldivian Foreign Minister Dr. Iruthisham Adam welcomed Seychelles Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism Barry Faure to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This encounter represents the first ever official visit to the Maldives by a Seychelles Foreign Minister, signaling a renewed commitment to regional partnership. The talks centered on enhancing long-standing ties in tourism, trade, and investment. Given their shared geographic and economic characteristics as island nations, both ministers emphasized the importance of intensifying people-to-people connections and collaborating on the urgent challenges posed by climate change. Beyond bilateral interests, the two nations discussed strategic alignment among Small Island Developing States (SIDS). The ministers explored ways to amplify their collective voice within influential regional and multilateral forums, including the United Nations, the Commonwealth, the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), and the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS). Foreign Minister Iruthisham noted that this visit is the first official exchange since the formation of the new government in Seychelles. He expressed confidence that the foundational friendship between the two countries will continue to deepen in the coming years. The meeting was attended by several high-ranking officials, including Foreign Secretary Fathimath Inaya and Secretaries Dr. Hala Hameed and Ahmed Shiaan. The discussions occur as the Maldives and Seychelles celebrate the 46th anniversary of their diplomatic relations, which were officially established on July 1, 1980.
