Maldives and Seychelles Strengthen Ties with New Visa-Free Travel Agreement

Politics ·
The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora of Seychelles, Barry Faure, has concluded his historic official visit to the Maldives, marking the first time a Seychelles Foreign Minister has visited the archipelago. The visit focused on deepening diplomatic, economic, and environmental ties between the two Small Island Developing States (SIDS). During the mission, Minister Faure held a series of productive discussions with his Maldivian counterpart, Iruthisham Adam. The talks centered on enhancing bilateral cooperation in critical sectors, including tourism, trade, and investment. Both ministers also emphasized the need for a unified voice at regional and multilateral forums to address the unique challenges faced by island nations. A primary achievement of the visit was the formal implementation of the Agreement on Short Stay Visa Waiver. Effective as of May 15, 2026, the agreement eliminates visa requirements for nationals of both countries for short stays of up to 30 days, a move expected to boost people-to-people exchanges and facilitate easier travel for tourists and business professionals. Beyond policy and diplomacy, the visit highlighted a shared commitment to environmental preservation. The two ministers participated in a tree-planting ceremony at Lonuziyaaraiy Park, contributing to the Five Million Trees Plantation Programme launched by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that this gesture symbolizes the collective resolve of both nations to combat climate change and prioritize sustainability. The visit reaffirms the longstanding friendship between Malé and Victoria, establishing a framework for closer coordination on climate action and economic growth. Minister Faure was seen off at the airport by senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs upon his departure.
