Maldives and Sri Lanka Vow to Deepen Ties During Presidential Talks

President Mohamed Muizzu and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake held official talks on Monday at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo, reaffirming the strong bilateral bonds between the two neighboring nations. The meeting took place as part of President Muizzu’s ongoing state visit to Sri Lanka.
The two leaders emphasized the enduring nature of their diplomatic relationship, noting that the Maldives and Sri Lanka will mark 60 years of formal diplomatic ties in July 2025. Beyond official statecraft, both presidents acknowledged the vital role of people-to-people connections and the contributions that citizens from both nations have made toward each other's national development.
The discussions spanned a broad spectrum of mutual interests, aiming to modernize and expand existing cooperation. Key sectors identified for enhanced collaboration include economic development, healthcare, and social welfare. The leaders also focused on youth empowerment and education, as well as the shared preservation of culture and heritage.
Security cooperation and fisheries remained central to the dialogue, reflecting the strategic importance of maritime stability and food security in the Indian Ocean region. Both leaders agreed that strengthening these sectors is essential for ensuring regional stability and fostering sustainable growth.
Closing the session, President Muizzu and President Dissanayake reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral engagement. They pledged to expand cooperation in areas that directly support sustainable development goals and enhance the stability of the region.
The high-level talks were attended by cabinet ministers and senior government officials from both the Maldives and Sri Lanka, signaling a comprehensive state-level commitment to the partnership.
