Maldives and Turkiye Launch Preferential Trade Agreement to Boost Seafood Exports

World ·
The Maldives and Turkiye have officially implemented a landmark Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA), establishing a new framework for bilateral trade and economic cooperation. The pact formally entered into force on August 1, 2026, following the completion of all legal procedures and the exchange of final written notifications between the two governments. A cornerstone of the agreement is the strategic opening of the Turkish market—boasting 85 million consumers—to Maldivian seafood exports. By reducing or eliminating import duties on 75 specific items, the agreement provides a significant catalyst for the Maldivian fishing industry to scale its international reach. In exchange, the Maldives will receive preferential tariff concessions on essential goods and basic food items imported from Turkiye. According to the Ministry of Economic Development, Transport and Trade, diversifying these import channels is expected to stabilize domestic market prices and enhance the nation's overall economic resilience. The agreement is the result of diplomatic efforts initiated in November 2023, when President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu selected Turkiye for his first official overseas state visit. During that visit, President Muizzu and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan outlined a vision for strengthened bilateral relations focused on trade and investment, which culminated in the official signing of the PTA in November 2024. The Ministry described the implementation of the pact as a monumental step toward achieving long-term sustainable development goals. By securing essential goods and empowering local exporters, the agreement aims to foster inclusive growth and symbolize a shared commitment to robust international trade partnerships.
