Maldives and Türkiye Push for Duty Exemptions Under Preferential Trade Agreement

The Maldives and Türkiye have held high-level talks to maximize the benefits of their Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA), focusing on duty exemptions for selected goods to stimulate bilateral trade. The discussions took place during an official visit to Türkiye by the Minister of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam. While attending the Zero Waste Forum, Minister Shiyam met with Türkiye’s Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, İbrahim Yumaklı, to strategize on strengthening cooperation within the primary sectors of agriculture and fisheries. A central pillar of the meeting was the acceleration of the PTA and a corresponding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Both ministers emphasized the urgent need to transition from diplomatic commitments to practical implementation. By activating duty exemptions on specific products, both nations aim to lower trade barriers and create tangible economic opportunities for businesses in both the Maldives and Türkiye. Minister Shiyam expressed gratitude for the ongoing assistance provided by the Turkish government, noting that the partnership is vital for enhancing local capacities.
