Maldives and UK Strengthen Strategic Ties Through Defence and Trade Agreements

The Maldives and the United Kingdom have reaffirmed their strategic partnership, pledging to deepen cooperation across defence, maritime security, and economic development. The commitment was formalized during the latest UK-Maldives Strategic Dialogue, which serves as a structured framework to advance bilateral relations following previous engagements in 2023 and 2025. Security and stability in the Indian Ocean region remained a primary focus. The UK pledged continued technical assistance and training to enhance Maldivian capabilities in policing, defence, and maritime security. Both nations also reviewed critical cooperation regarding counterterrorism and protective security, while ensuring streamlined consular support for their respective citizens. In a significant boost for the Maldivian economy, the two nations discussed trade and investment opportunities in fisheries and renewable energy. Specifically, the Maldives welcomed the UK's decision to suspend tariffs on tuna imports from May 20, 2026, through December 31, 2028, a move expected to benefit the local fishing industry. The dialogue also addressed the critical pillars of democratic governance. The UK reiterated its support for the Maldives' efforts to uphold human rights, ensure judicial independence, and strengthen the rule of law. This commitment to governance is mirrored in the education sector, where both parties highlighted the impact of Chevening and Commonwealth Scholarships in fostering people-to-people links. Environmental resilience and ocean governance were high on the agenda as both countries prepare for COP31. Building on the Ocean Country Partnership Programme, the Maldives and UK agreed to expand collaboration on marine conservation and climate resilience, addressing the unique challenges faced by Small Island Developing States (SIDS). Tourism continues to be a cornerstone of the relationship, with the Maldives noting that over 200,000 UK visitors arrived in 2025. The talks were co-chaired by Laure Beaufils, Director for South Asia and Afghanistan at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, and Dr. Hala Hameed, Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Maldives. The session concluded with an agreement to maintain annual Strategic Dialogues, ensuring a consistent and evolving partnership between the two nations.
