World ·
The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has entered into a strategic partnership with the United States Department of Homeland Security to bolster law enforcement capabilities and combat the rise of transnational crime. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed during a formal ceremony at the Iskandhar Building in Malé. The agreement was formalized between Commissioner of Police Ahmed Mohamed and Regional Attaché Earl Mattear, representing Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), a directorate of the US Department of Homeland Security's Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency. This partnership establishes a comprehensive framework for operational collaboration, focusing on the prevention, disruption, and investigation of criminal activities that cross international borders. By aligning their efforts, both agencies aim to address emerging security challenges that threaten the stability and safety of both nations. Key pillars of the agreement include the systematic sharing of intelligence and the implementation of regular consultations to support active law enforcement operations. Beyond immediate tactical cooperation, the MoU emphasizes long-term capacity building, promising specialized training opportunities for Maldivian law enforcement personnel to enhance their investigative techniques. The Maldives Police Service highlighted that this international cooperation is vital for improving border security and protecting public safety. By leveraging the expertise and resources of the US Department of Homeland Security, the MPS intends to modernize its approach to evolving security threats, ensuring a more robust defense against organized crime and illicit trafficking. This agreement marks a significant step in strengthening bilateral security ties between Malé and Washington, recognizing that modern criminal networks require a coordinated, global response to be effectively dismantled.
