The Maldives government has designated Project Ayla, a sustainable township in Noonu Atoll, as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) through a presidential decree. The development, valued at USD 790 million (MVR 12 billion), is part of an investment agreement signed with Crystal Holdings. Scheduled for completion by 2028, Project Ayla will include high-quality real estate, an international-standard healthcare facility, hospitality and leadership training centers, and an ultra-luxury tourist resort targeting high-net-worth visitors. The SEZ will operate on at least 60% renewable energy and will also feature modern agriculture and aquaculture systems, residential facilities, and essential services for workers. The allocated area includes Dhekenanfaru, Kuramaadhu, and its lagoon in the northwestern part of Noonu Atoll. Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed emphasized the project's potential to elevate the Maldivian economy by creating new employment opportunities and opening investment avenues.
