The Maldives has announced its full support for the United Arab Emirates' nomination of Ambassador Lana Zaki Nusseibeh for the position of United Nations Secretary-General. In a statement, the Maldives Foreign Ministry welcomed the nomination, noting that the time has come for a woman to lead the world body – a position the Maldives has consistently advocated. The ministry emphasized that this is a critical moment for the UN, requiring principled leadership, wisdom, and the ability to build trust and consensus among member states. The Maldives believes the next Secretary-General must uphold the UN Charter and international law, prioritize human dignity, justice, and the equitable enforcement of international norms, and work to advance peace, sustainable development, and human rights. As a small island developing state, the Maldives reaffirmed its commitment to a credible, robust, and inclusive UN that enables all nations to fully participate in overcoming global challenges and building a hopeful future.
