Finance Minister Hassan Zareer has announced that the proposed state budget for next year will give special attention to strengthening the fisheries and agriculture sectors, describing them as the two most important industries for ensuring the Maldives' economic independence and the well-being of its citizens. Presenting the budget at today's session of the People's Majlis, Minister Zareer outlined key initiatives, including projects to establish an additional 11,400 tons of storage capacity within 2027 and plans to expand mariculture. The budget also includes increasing daily ice production capacity by an additional 550 tons, with ice plants designated specifically for fish farming. The minister noted that the newly established large cold storage facility in Hulhumale will provide opportunities for small and medium-sized businesses to directly earn foreign currency. Regarding agriculture, Minister Zareer said the budget will give special attention to further strengthening initiatives for "food security" to develop the sector. He added that varieties easily grown in the central region of the country can be imported under a robust system, and it will be ensured that local farmers receive fair prices for their hard work and produce.
