Maldives Delivers $800,352 in Public Donations to Cyclone-Hit Sri Lanka

Politics ·
The Maldives has formally presented USD 800,352 to Sri Lanka, raised through a national telethon to support recovery efforts following Cyclone Ditwah. Maldivian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Mas’ood Imad, delivered the funds on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The fundraising initiative, organized by Public Service Media (PSM) in collaboration with 37 Maldivian media outlets, ran from November 29 to December 1. The campaign saw an overwhelming response from Maldivian citizens, government institutions, private companies, and community organizations. Donations were collected through a dedicated bank account and physical fund boxes placed across Malé City. To ensure complete transparency in the process, the independent audit firm Crowe Maldives oversaw the entire collection and accounting procedure. This substantial contribution highlights the strong bilateral ties and spirit of regional cooperation between the Maldives and Sri Lanka. The funds will directly assist communities in Sri Lanka affected by the cyclone's devastation, providing crucial support for rebuilding and recovery efforts.
