Maldives Demands Guaranteed UN Representation for Small Island Nations at Biodiversity Summit

The Maldives is leveraging the 28th meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA) in Nairobi, Kenya, to champion the rights and vulnerabilities of Small Island Developing States (SIDS). Running from July 27 to August 1, the high-level gathering serves as a critical precursor to the upcoming CBD COP-17 Summit, where global environmental policies will be finalized. According to the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, the primary focus of the Nairobi sessions is to establish scientific guidelines, evaluate the progress of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, and refine national monitoring systems. For the Maldives, however, the mission extends beyond technicalities to a fight for institutional visibility. Central to the Maldivian delegation's agenda is the demand for dedicated, guaranteed seats for small island nations within the Convention’s technical expert groups. The Ministry emphasized that such representation is essential to ensure that nations most susceptible to environmental collapse have a direct hand in the decision-making processes that affect their survival. Beyond securing seats at the table, the Maldives is pushing for the unique conservation challenges of island states to be formally integrated into global review processes. The government is also calling for targeted international assistance to bridge the gap in scientific monitoring and reporting capacities, noting that resource constraints often hinder the ability of smaller states to track biodiversity loss accurately. Furthermore, the Maldives is advocating for a global policy framework rooted strictly in transparent scientific evidence. The delegation is urging that critical data and findings be made accessible to all nations, regardless of their economic standing or size, to prevent a knowledge gap in climate resilience. The Ministry underscored that this meeting represents a strategic opportunity to expand the Maldives' leadership in the international environmental arena, ensuring that the voices of the most vulnerable are not overshadowed by larger global powers.
