Maldives Earns Global Recognition for Advancing Sustainable Financial Reporting Standards
World ·
The Maldives has gained international acclaim for its efforts to implement sustainable financial reporting standards, marking a significant step in the modernization of the nation's accounting and financial sectors. Mohamed Haleem Abdulla, President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of the Maldives (CA Maldives), announced the achievement during the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) Forum.
Addressing a gathering of over 300 financial experts, researchers, and industry professionals at the Shaheed Ali School auditorium in Hulhumalé Phase II, Haleem emphasized that the global acknowledgment demonstrates how a small island nation can lead in the adoption of sustainable reporting practices. These efforts are designed to align the Maldives with evolving global financial norms and emerging technologies.
Mohamed Ahmed, CEO of the Capital Market Development Authority (CMDA), highlighted the strategic importance of these standards for the nation's economic future. He noted that sustainability is no longer optional but critical for the Maldives, as it is directly linked to the resilience of the economy and long-term development, particularly for investors and the capital market sector.
CA Maldives is currently rolling out the IFRS S1 and IFRS S2 sustainability standards. The organization is also preparing for the implementation of the IFRS 18 standard, which is expected to take effect next year. These initiatives aim to provide a more transparent and comprehensive view of how businesses manage sustainability-related risks and opportunities.
Beyond technical updates, the forum served as the launchpad for the "Accountants in Business" (AIB) campaign. Inaugurated by CMDA CEO Mohamed Ahmed, the AIB initiative seeks to formally register finance and accounting personnel working across Maldivian businesses. This move is intended to solidify the country's commitment to professional development and financial transparency across both large corporations and small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs).
