Maldives Elected Vice-Chair of UN General Assembly Economic and Financial Committee

The Maldives has been unanimously elected as Vice-Chair of the Economic and Financial Committee of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) for its 81st session. The election took place during official proceedings at the UN Headquarters in New York. Hussain Azhaan Mohamed Hussain, Second Secretary at the Permanent Mission of the Maldives to the United Nations, will represent the country on the committee’s bureau. In this capacity, the Maldives will collaborate with the Chair and other bureau members to ensure the efficient administration and conduct of the committee's work throughout the session, which is scheduled to run from September 2026 to September 2027. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this election serves as a testament to the international community's continued confidence in the Maldives’ diplomatic engagement within the United Nations. The appointment comes as the Maldives intensifies its advocacy for the accelerated implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. A key priority for the Maldives in this role will be strengthening the global development financing architecture. The nation aims to ensure that the unique challenges and priorities of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are prominently featured and addressed within multilateral processes. Known as the Second Committee, the Economic and Financial Committee is one of the six primary committees of the UN General Assembly. It is tasked with reviewing and considering critical global issues related to sustainable development and economic growth. The committee's bureau is responsible for managing proceedings and providing guidance on the operational conduct of its legislative work.
