Maldives Ends MVR 175,000 Office Allowance for Ex-Presidents
Politics ·
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has signed legislation to eliminate the monthly MVR 175,000 office allowance for former presidents, previously funded by the state budget. The allowance was part of a financial package introduced in 2009. The new law, ratified on December 6, 2025, also restricts former presidents from receiving perks while serving a second term or holding another state role. Additionally, former presidents residing abroad will no longer receive state security. The legislation introduces a monthly MVR 30,000 allowance for former vice presidents, along with medical expense coverage. The government can now adjust these allowances without parliamentary oversight during economic crises. Critics have long viewed the former presidents' perks as wasteful.
